Chaos Based Cryptography

This paper shall discuss the design of a Chaos based symmetric key cryptosystem. The structure of two contemporary symmetric key encryption schemes using the Logistic map is discussed and their performance is evaluated based on a battery of tests and some qualitative measures. It is deduced that one scheme performs far better than the other. It is then experimentally shown that the performance of this scheme can be improved significantly with the use of other wellknown chaotic maps. The maximal Lyapunov exponent, which quantifies the degree of chaos in a system, is evaluated for all these chaotic maps including the Logistic map. It is concluded that the real advantage of a Chaos based symmetric key cryptosystem lies in its sensitivity to the key, and this fact is not brought to light by the conventional performance measures.
